SIDNEY LAU'S SYSTEM OF CANTONESE PRONUNCIATION

This uses a numbered system to indicate tones and directions.

1 = high falling

2 = mid-rising

3 = mid-level

4 = low falling

5 = low rising

6 = low level

Chan Kong Sang would then be written and pronounced: Chan4 Kong1 Sang1. (Chan4 is low falling tone, Kong1 and Sang1 are high.

Here is an exception. When two words having high falling tones follow each other, the first tone changes to a high level tone, so to be precise Kong1 would actually be printed as Kong10 with the "1" and"0" as superscripts. I haven't found a good way to do superscripts in html.
